A little bit of everything I have been up to lately

Well, it's time for another large blog post as I've fallen behind with updating again! For the past month or so I have been getting into watercolour painting, something I'm not all that familiar with as I've always used inks or acrylic. Basically, I got a bit obsessed with painting autumn-y leaves.

A couple of these I decided to get printed as postcards (along with a new set of stickers) which will be available to buy here soon -

Since my last post I also completed this as part of a commission -

Which brings me to today! Today I have been experimenting using a different type of lino (it's grey, brittle and made my arm ache D:) and came up with this print to use for this year's christmas cards!

...And that's pretty much everything. I really must try to update more often!

Greeting card designs

Okay, so I know it's October, and I know I should be doing something Hallowe'eny because it's way more fun, but this month I've been working on Christmas cards. I decided to create two christmassy designs and send them along with two unchristmassy designs to get printed for my store. They arrived yesterday from which is a great site if you ever want to get stuff printed.

These will be available to buy from my store (right here: soon!

Mushrooms and badges!

It's been a while, so I thought I ought to update with a couple of things I've been up to recently.

Last week I created some bear designs for a set of badges I'm planning to add to my online store. They arrived a couple of days ago and I was really pleased with the quality of them! Today I've been working on the packaging so that they're ready for sale.

I've also had time to do another little illustration, this time with singing mushrooms. Hooray!

Getting back to some painting.

Recently I've been doing all my work digitally, which has really had an effect on my motivation! Sitting with a tablet and staring at a screen for hours is nowhere near as fun as getting your hands covered in ink. Maybe it's just me.

Anyway, here's a painting I finished today called "Goodbye". Usually after I've scanned a painting I like to edit it in photoshop, but this time I feel like leaving it 100% traditional.

Animal Stickers!

I worked on some designs for animal stickers last week, got them ordered and they came yesterday! I'm trying my best not to compulsively stick them everywhere so that I can add them to my Etsy store soon.

Aw yeah!

What I have been up to recently

I haven't updated much recently so here's one big post with all the illustration-y things I have been working on!

Firstly I finished work on a set of art prints which are now available for sale here:

I worked on some little bits I did to go on my creative CV (rabbits, totally original).

These two were part of a video game themed commission! (Ilomilo and Journey)

...And this last one I did just for fun!

Forget Me Not

More experimenting! This time I decided to see how much I could take away from the background and it still look okay.
Also, a lot of tiny Forget Me Nots in this one, which are one of my favourite flowers!

This week I've been experimenting a little more working on photoshop, and it's taken way longer than I thought it would because this time I tested out outlining in different colours. Which sounds really boring but is actually... yeah, not all that thrilling!

Close up!

Little Red Riding Hood

Decided to start working on an idea I've had for a while - a series of illustrations of modern day kids in traditional fairy tales! Here's the first one -

Finishing university and rabbits

Goodness, my time at university is almost over and while I try and work out what to do with myself next I figure the best thing to do is carry on making bright/cute pictures. It's weird to think that about 4 years ago I had no idea what I wanted to do, my childhood dreams of being an artist felt very distant and I held some vague notion that I should do something science related instead. Then, almost on a whim one day I thought 'I like drawing, maybe illustration is a thing I could do' and shyly mentioned this to a couple of people to gauge their response because to me it felt a little ridiculous. I'd slowly grown out of drawing and painting in my spare time, although never completely, and the closest art related subject I'd done at school in years was a-level graphics. I did know, however, that it was the only thing I was enthusiastic about doing and so went for it. Throughout the course my enthusiasm for illustration has only grown and now I can't see myself doing anything else.
I can't predict how successful I'll be as an illustrator, but I'm determined to keep on moving forward doing what makes me happy regardless.
Anyway, I think the point I'm making is here's a picture of some rabbits -

(I'm sorry if that was anticlimactic)

Panda guide to sleeping!

Well, I meant to spend this afternoon working on a competition but then I started drawing baby pandas.  After extensive research (a search on google images) I have come to the conclusion you can sleep like a baby panda in 3 easy steps -

Macmillan picture book competition

I just entered the Macmillan Prize with a story about a bear who wants to be a rabbit. This was a project I worked on in second year but felt it wasn't good enough to enter, so I redrew all the pages and redid all the final artwork so that I was happier entering it this year. I somehow managed to get all of it done in 2 weeks around all my other uni work (really I just wanted an excuse to draw bears, I think).

Haroun and the Sea of Stories - redo!

I decided to redo my first double page for my final major project because it was kind of terrible (and I was a fool and did it with the wrong dimensions). I changed up the composition to fit it all on one double page, which also made it a little less boring, and added tentacles for extra menacing-ness!

Overall I feel a bit better about this now.

Rashid Khalifa Storyteller doll

I've finally gotten around to finishing my second doll for my final major project. Making these has inspired me to start sewing cats and bears and stuff, but I think I will need to buy a sewing machine first!
Anyway, here he is -

So many foxes!

A piece I've been working on for a competition. I decided to try a slightly different way of working with this one, despite all the times I say I'm never doing digital work ever again I always go back to it.

Waiting to get feedback on monday, so I might need to make a few changes!

More picture book pages!

Just about finished another double page, this time with flying things! I can't decide whether I like this one or not, but maybe that's because I've been looking at it too long. I enjoyed drawing all kinds of crazy flying creatures for it though, that was fun.

Haroun and the Sea of Stories - picture book double page

Just finished my second double page for my final major project (though I think I'm going to have to super edit my first one). I think I might have gone a little crazy brightening up the colours in photoshop, but I like bright!

Haroun and the Sea of Stories - character stickers

This week I've been working on more lino prints to make into stickers and I actually think I'm getting the hang of this lino printing business!

Finished set of prints

Here are my finished sticker designs -
